Medullan's January Newsletter - Medullan Celebrates Five Years!
01/25/2010 - This January, Medullan celebrates its 5th anniversary as a company. Looking back, we feel honored to have worked closely with an amazing line-up of clients and partners on a broad range of healthcare solutions. We have grown together in this transformative era of Healthcare and have weathered the economic turmoil of 2009. We have stayed true to our mission of being a catalyst for healthcare innovation and enabling the effective use of technology to drive the industry forward. In this issue, we share some insider perspectives on the last five years as well as some recent client milestones.
Medullan Helps OPED Get a Leg-up
Medullan has worked with OPED, Inc. for over a year on developing iGetBetter, a care coordination platform for consumer-focused rehabilitation. In 2009, we covered some new ground, connecting an electronic orthopedic device to iGetBetter. The device, a 'smart boot', was a combination of OPED's Vacocast diabetic boot and 24eight's pressure sensing smart insole.
The goal was to create a way to electronically track the progress made in rehabilitation for patients with open wounds underneath their feet. A system of monitoring the foot sole through a pressure sensitive device allows the physician to know exactly how many steps are taken on any given day by the patient and if any excessive weight is being applied to the feet.
The project included creating a calibration application that is used to fit a 'smart boot' for a new patient. It records a pressure profile of the foot, taken as the patient stands and walks in the boot. Both baseline and ongoing readings are transmitted to iGetBetter via Web services.
The iGetBetter application renders the transmitted readings as graphs showing the foot pressure profile as well as step count for a patient. The patient's progress is recorded along with his or her rehabilitation plan which may include nutrition, medication, or other activities. If the software detects any sudden increase in steps or pressure, the physician is automatically notified. This real-time interaction is beneficial in helping a patient receive timely care for problems encountered in their recovery program.
This integration allows OPED to reach an entire new market of providers who are interested in scalable, real-time, remote monitoring devices for their patients.

Have you had a chance to visit the state's consumer friendly website to look up and compare quality and costs of your local hospitals?
MyHealthcareOptions went live in Dec 2008 with quality and cost information on a number of procedures and conditions at MA hospitals along with other helpful information on how to make good Healthcare decisions. Medullan worked with the Healthcare Quality and Cost Council to design and develop Version 1 of the public reporting website.
This year, Medullan was awarded the contract to develop Version 2 of the application. Work will kick-off in January 2010 and will focus on augmenting the website to include additional provider types, conditions, procedures, and quality and cost measures as well as creating tools to make it easier for the website's data management teams to manage and update the data.
